DWYS Presents "We Gather" with Sheffield Cathedral
Join us for a special evening to celebrate Dig Where You Stand's new and ground-breaking summer exhibition.
Over the last year, 14 artists have been commissioned to dig through local archives and respond to the untold stories of people of colour in South Yorkshire, stretching back hundreds of years. Their artworks will be on display in various venues across Sheffield City Centre from the 20th July to 18th August.
For one night only at Sheffield Cathedral you can be transported and feel the full force of these stirring pieces with a series of lives performances . These will be delivered by four fantastic artists:
Through live poetry, dance and music they will reimagine the encounter between two West African sailors and a Sheffield-born missionary in 1820, the psychodrama of a son settling in the steel city as he wrestles with the fame of his African American father in the late 19th century, and the female strength of the so-called 'Gypsy Queen' buried in Beighton, Sheffield in the 1940s.
Performances will be followed by discussion about the stories behind the artworks and the process of creating them.
Please note that BSL interpretation will be available throughout performances.
